SWHP Special Project

Knots of Friendship

My special project this year represents a way to “kill two birds with one stone”: to allow each of us, even our shut-ins, to satisfy their need to be useful and to fulfill our obligation to follow the simple religion of Christ by spreading His love to those around us.

Look at the situation in your community. Are you close to a Veteran’s Hospital, a battered women’s Shelter, or a nursing home? Is there some support group for those facing cancer? Is there a local Emergency Management Team that responds to fires or floods? The point is to find some local organization that works daily with people who are in physical or emotional distress and then provide them with a tangible item that will offer comfort to those in need. “Knots of Friendship” was begun with prayer shawls in mind. Shawls that encircle someone who is hurting with warmth and with the love and prayers of the giver can offer comfort that goes beyond words. They offer blessings to both the giver and the receiver.

If there are sojourners in your Shrine who would be able to knit or crochet the shawls, patterns are available for them to use. Perhaps other sojourners in the Shrine would contribute yarn for the projects. Another sojourner may be able to take the finished shawls to their church to be dedicated with prayers for the recipient, knowing that God knows the needs of the individual who will receive it although we do not. Another may be able to deliver the shawls to the recipients or to the local organization that will present them to someone in need.

If your Shrine has no needle-workers, the item provided could be something simple and appropriate for your community: socks, hotel-sized toiletries, lap robes, etc. The object is not to spend money on a charity – we have our Material Objective Fund to distribute our monetary contributions. The idea is to provide a visible outreach to the community of loving and prayerful support to the hurting, and at the same time help our sojourners fulfill our own need to be useful.

I am asking that each WHP appoint someone in their Shrine to take charge of this project and to report to my General Chairman with the details of the local project. Photos of the items presented would be nice to include with the report or in article submitted to the Supreme Herald publication.
